THANK YOU CHRISTOPHE for this powerful and urgent message – Tibet is a war zone, and Lobsang Sangay says to Al Jazeera he is confident that “The issue can be resolved with peaceful dialogue.” After decades of failed talks and scores of deaths in Tibet, that is plainly delusional and insulting to the people inside Tibet.

A note on the “respite” periods. Perhaps I have my data wrong, but between November 2011 and January 2012, there were no 54 days of respite. There was a self-immolation on 3 November, 1 December, and two on 6 January. The data can be found here: http://www.rfa.org/english/news/special/TibetanImmolations/Home.html.

    Pisetzky,

Thanks for your remark. As mentioned in the article — as well as if you look carefully at the graph — there was one self-immolations during the 56 days.

    The dates are as follow:

    November 4: Sherab Tsedor (Delhi)
    November 10: Bhutuk (Kathmandu)
December 1: Tenzin Phuntsok (Karma, Chamdo)
    January 6: Lobsang Tsultrim (Ngaba)
    January 6: Tenyi (Ngaba)

Between Nov. 10 and January 6, there are indeed 56 days of respite.

Yes, I did look at the graph, and since there was one self-immolation, which your graph acknowledges, then you cannot call it a respite, can you? More like a slowing of pace.

If you insist on respite, it looks like you’re trying to fit the facts with your theory.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your article though would add that you have left out one also not less important consideration, that the self-immolations could also very well be an appeal to the exile Tibetan community at large, i.e. the people, considering the consistent calls for unity …
