On September 11 this year a plaque was unveiled at Camp Hale in the Rockies to honor the Tibetan Freedom fighters who were trained at this secret base by the CIA to fight for their country against Communist China. To give readers some visual  idea of what happened at the time I have posted a gallery of old photographs here. I would be grateful if readers could direct me to other existing photographs,  and also to the names of people that I have been unable to identify. Photographs of the recent plaque unveiling ceremony will appear with an essay of mine in a couple of days.

As I saw these pictures, I was inspired to translate this old Hindi song into English in memory of these brave fighters.

Having sacrificed our lives and limbs,
    Now we depart, dear friends.
    Handing over our motherland,
    Unto your care, dear friends.

Our breath had grown shorter, our pulses weaker,
But our forward feet knew no respite, no rest.
Not an iota of regret, even if we lose our heads,
The Himalayas, we made sure did not lose its pride.
While we are dying, a parting salute, my friends,

    Handing over our motherland,
    Unto your care, dear friends.
Having sacrificed our lives and limbs,
    Now we depart, dear friends.

Though there are springs aplenty to live,
The season of sacrifice does not come always.
A disgrace it will be, to love and beauty,
If unbathed in blood, our youth went by,
Thus our land, our beloved, we make, dear friends.

    Handing over our motherland,
    Unto your care, dear friends.
Having sacrificed our lives and limbs,
    Now we depart, dear friends.

Let the path of sacrifice not become so desolate,
Make sure you decorate new caravans each day.
The celebration of victory is after this festivity,
Now as life and death are embracing with great joy,
Happily we wear the shroud of death, my friends.

    Handing over our motherland,
    Unto your care, dear friends.
Having sacrificed our lives and limbs,
    Now we depart, dear friends.

Draw with your own blood a crimson line on the earth,
So that the evil monster dares not trespass again.
Break his hands, if his hands are ever raised,
Let him not desecrate the honour of your land again.
You are its protector and so are you its defender.

    Handing over our motherland,
    Unto your care, dear friends.
Having sacrificed our lives and limbs,
    Now we depart, dear friends.

The song in Hindi is called ‘Kar Chale Hum Fida’ from the movie Haqeeqat beautifully sung by Mohammed Rafi. Here is a youtube link to the original video http://www.youtube.com/watch?hl=en-GB&v=nn0HPgss_QU .
